Misery

No, I'm not in misery, I just finished reading the novel entitled 'Misery' written by the great Stephen King :D Yes I do realise that I'm rather out of date reading this only now, but I only started to actually read Stephen King's works late last year when my friend offered to lend me her copy of 'The Dark Half' (which is also a really gripping and interesting piece). I was hooked instantaneously.

I am very lucky that one of my dad's friends read a lot, and have some S.K books in possession, so he lent those to me as well :D And the latest book I've finished reading is Misery.

'Misery' is a tale about a bestselling author, Paul Sheldon, who drives to L.A after completing a novel, Fast Cars despite having drunk three bottles of champagne. In his inebriated state he is unaware that the Colorado Western Slope is going to be hit with one of the biggest snowstorms of the year in a few hours, loses control of his car, drives off the road and tumbles down the hill.

He is rescued by a nurse, Annie Wilkes, who takes him to her home to recuperate instead of sending him to a hospital. Annie tells Paul that she is his number one fan and loves his bestselling series, Misery. When Annie reads the latest copy of the series which was just released around that time, she is enraged that he killed off Misery in his last book, and orders him to 'bring Misery back to life'. Paul initially refuses to do so, but when he realizes that Annie is insane and will stop at nothing to get her book, he is forced to comply.

The book then centers on how Paul tries to escape but fails to do so, and how he later came to realize that he was not only writing the book for Annie - he himself had found the novel turning out to be his best Misery book ever written.

I'd say this novel is not as horrifying as it is gruesome, there are certain scenes that depict Annie torturing Paul which are really... well, vivid and gory. The thing I like about Stephen King is that you can really picture the scene in your mind's eye based on his descriptions. He really is a talented story writer. I'm currently reading Pet Semetary, and so far so good :D

So to those of you who enjoy reading a classic psychological thriller, do read Misery ;)
